April 2008
Dear Fellow Giftie:
As many of you know, the Governor's Program for Gifted Children celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer. Dr. Middleton started the Program in 1959 to nurture gifted and talented students, and he created a special place where hundreds of children have blossomed into creative, dynamic, and free-thinking adults.
The GPGC Alumni Association is planning a GPGC 50th Anniversary Reunion this summer in Lake Charles to honor that legacy. Dozens of GPGC alums, spanning all years of the Program, are working hard to encapsulate the best of those summers into a single, once-in-a-lifetime weekend:
Thursday, July 24 - Sunday, July 27, 2008
We encourage you to visit the GPGC Alumni Association website and register as an alum. Once you register, you'll receive a username and password that will allow you to log on and access the Members Only section, where you can draw on our extensive database of contact info to find old friends and classmates and to fill them in on what you've been doing since leaving the Program. You'll be able to watch the Program's final performances of the summer, reconnect with many former teachers and fellow Gifties, and see how the Program has evolved since your time on campus.
You'll also find information on the website about the upcoming reunion, which is taking place on the McNeese campus and at the L'Auberge du Lac Hotel and Resort. Please make your reservations for the hotel SOON, because at least half of the rooms originally being held for us by l'Auberge have already been reserved by alumni who will be attending!!!
We've also included events to take you back in time, including an opportunity to play all your favorite old games (Risk, back alley bridge, spades, hearts, chess...bring your favorite!), a Bilbo Baggins birthday pajama party, and--what may be the highlight of the weekend for many--a dance in the Ranch's Parra Ballroom, complete with all the great songs you remember from your days as a Giftie!
We are sending out reunion packets by mail to all alumni that we have good addresses for. In this packet, you'll find a form to sign up for the 50th Reunion, detailed information about L'Auberge du Lac and making your reservation, a schedule of reunion events, and a form for updating your profile with the GPGC Alumni Association.
To sign up, please fill out the reunion sign-up form--you can fill out the paper form mailed to you, or download the electronic file and fill it out in Word, then print it--and send it back with a check in the included envelope. Then call to make your hotel reservations at L'Auberge du Lac--the exciting, high-end resort that has given us a deep discount (see the hotel accommodations page for more details). Sign up early to make sure you get this great rate, because only a certain number of rooms could be set aside for the reunion. Your profile will be bound with those of other alumni and distributed at the reunion as the ultimate Giftie Alumni Networking Directory. (If you fill out your profile online, you do not need to fill out the paper form. You do not have to complete the entire form in a single session.)
All of these documents can be found online on the website, but you must mail in your reunion sign-up form and your check to be officially signed up to attend the reunion.
The last day to mail your sign up for the GPGC 50th Anniversary Reunion is Saturday, July 12, 2008, if you want to avoid a late fee. (Sign-up with late fee will be available at the reunion.) Log on to www.giftie.org for the latest reunion news, to see who else has registered with the alumni association, and to check out who's coming to the reunion!
We're all looking forward to seeing you this summer!
